A custom carpet needs a care plan as well as a design brief. Before installation, make sure the people who will clean it know its fibre, construction and recommended cleaning method.
Start with the carpet specification
Keep the approved material and care instructions with the project records. A cleaning routine for one rug may not suit another. The International Wool Textile Organisation publishes a dedicated wool carpet care guide, which is a useful starting point alongside the manufacturer’s instructions.
Make vacuuming part of the routine
The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends regular vacuuming, with more attention to areas that receive more foot traffic. Work slowly rather than making one quick pass. Check edges and corners, and empty or replace the vacuum bag as needed. Use equipment and settings suitable for the particular carpet.
Prepare for spills before they happen
Keep a clean white absorbent cloth available. Blot a spill promptly rather than scrubbing it into the pile. Follow the carpet’s care instructions and test a suitable cleaning product in an inconspicuous area before wider use. Ask a qualified cleaner for advice when the material or stain is uncertain.
Three details to agree at handover
- Who keeps the carpet specification and cleaning instructions?
- Which areas need more frequent attention?
- Who should the cleaning team contact for specialist advice?
For a GELISI project, include intended use and maintenance expectations in the initial brief so they can be considered during sampling. Discuss your carpet project.
