How to Treat Spills and Stains on Custom Carpets

A spill becomes a stain when it dries, spreads, or is rubbed into the pile. On a custom carpet — especially wool, silk or a carved pattern — the first minutes matter more than the product applied later.

Act before the spill travels

Lift solids with a spoon. Blot liquids with a clean, undyed white cloth or paper towel, pressing gently and repeating with a dry section of cloth. Work from the edge toward the centre so the mark does not grow. Do not scrub. Scrubbing felts wool and can blur a carved line.

If a little moisture is needed, dampen the cloth rather than pouring water onto the carpet. Blot again until the cloth comes away cleaner. Then blot dry. Support airflow in the room, and keep furniture off the damp area until it is fully dry. A carpet that feels dry on the surface can still be damp in the backing.

Water-based spills

Tea, coffee, wine, juice and soft drinks should be blotted immediately. A cloth barely dampened with clean water is enough for many fresh marks. For a light sugar or wine residue, a drop of clear, mild wool-safe detergent in a cup of water can be used on the cloth — not poured on — then rinsed by blotting with plain water and dried. Test any solution on a hidden edge first. Stop if the colour moves onto the cloth.

Oil, grease and cosmetics

Butter, salad oil, lipstick and some lotions sit on the fibre differently from tea or wine. Blot what you can. Do not add water first; water can spread an oily mark. A dry absorbent cloth, repeated, is the safe start. If the mark remains, call a professional cleaner and say what was spilled. Solvents used casually at home can strip colour from a custom dye lot.

Silk, carving and what to avoid

Silk and wool-silk areas need still more restraint. Blot only, and avoid homemade mixtures. Carved or high-low pile should be blotted flat, not brushed while wet. Never use bleach, ammonia, concentrated vinegar, laundry detergent or a steam iron on a handmade carpet. They can permanently shift colour.

If a mark has already dried, or if you do not know what caused it, professional cleaning is the better route. Tell the cleaner the fibre — wool, silk, nylon or a blend — and how long the spill has been there. Prompt, gentle blotting at home, and specialist help for anything that remains, is the routine that protects a custom piece.
