Hand-Tufted Craftsmanship Behind a Bespoke Carpet

A bespoke carpet is not a print enlarged to room size. Its surface is built, tuft by tuft, so the pattern, the pile and the edge all have to be decided before the frame is dressed. At GELISI, that sequence is the craft behind project work for hotels, residences, cultural spaces and commercial interiors.

The room comes before the motif

Pattern development starts with the plan. Furniture, circulation, daylight and the materials already in the room change how a design will read. A border may need to sit clear of a doorway. A medallion may need to centre on a table rather than on the geometric middle of the slab. Colour is judged against stone, timber and upholstery, not against a white sample card alone.

Once the direction is agreed, yarn and a strike-off confirm texture and colour. Sampling is the point where a drawing becomes a surface that can be approved.

Hand tufting on the frame

Hand tufting translates the approved artwork into pile. Yarn is worked through the backing on a frame, following the pattern at full scale. Tension, pile height and colour changes are controlled by the maker as the carpet grows. This is what allows a one-off size or an irregular outline: the carpet is made to the project, not cut down from a standard roll.

Wool, silk, nylon, bamboo fibre and wool-silk blends each behave differently under the tool. That is why fibre is chosen during design, not after the carpet is finished.

Carving, shearing and finishing

Tufting creates the structure. Finishing creates the definition guests and clients actually see. Shearing levels the pile. Carving opens the pattern, giving a floral, geometric or tonal design a clearer edge and a deeper shadow. Backing, binding and a final vacuum prepare the piece for delivery. Inspection checks colour consistency, pattern alignment, edges and the overall hand of the surface.

Why the hand work still matters

Repeatable technique does not remove judgment. Two carpets can share a drawing and still differ if tension, carving depth or colour placement drift. GELISI keeps design, sampling, tufting, finishing and inspection in one workflow so those decisions stay connected. The result is a carpet with a specific texture and a specific fit — made for the room that ordered it.
