Vacuuming removes dry soil. It does not remove the fine film of oils, spills and airborne dust that slowly dulls colour. Handmade carpets in homes, and carpets in hotels and public rooms, both need periodic professional cleaning — on different schedules, and with methods matched to the fibre.
Why a deeper clean still matters
Soil left in the pile works like fine sandpaper and makes the colour look tired even when the pattern is intact. In a residence this happens slowly. In a hotel lobby, a restaurant or a corridor it happens as part of normal operations. Professional cleaning, done before the carpet looks neglected, is what keeps a hospitality floor consistent between refurbishments.
How often to schedule it
For a home with moderate use, a wool or wool-blend carpet often benefits from professional cleaning about once a year, with extra attention to entries and dining areas. Guest rooms in a hotel may follow a similar or slightly shorter cycle. Lobbies, corridors and restaurants usually need a planned programme several times a year, plus prompt spot care after spills. These are intervals to agree with the housekeeper and the cleaner, not a rule for every building. A beach hotel and a private villa do not wear a carpet in the same way.
Methods that suit wool and hand-tufted pile
Ask for a method suited to the fibre. Wool and silk should not be saturated. Hot-water extraction can work well when the operator controls moisture, uses a wool-compatible detergent, and extracts thoroughly. Overwetting risks shrinkage, browning, odour and a long drying time. Dry compound or low-moisture methods are often kinder to carved wool and to silk accents, provided the compound is fully removed so it does not stay in the pile as new soil.
Avoid high-alkaline detergents and any “one product for every fibre” approach. A custom carpet may combine wool with silk or nylon. The cleaner should know that before starting.
Before and after the appointment
Clear small furniture where possible, and point out stains, pet accidents and any area that was recently treated at home. After cleaning, keep traffic off the carpet until it is dry through the backing, not only to the touch. Open windows or use airflow if the room allows it. Then return to the ordinary routine: vacuum with the brush bar lifted, blot new spills, and keep grit at the door. Professional cleaning maintains the carpet. It does not replace weekly care.
